Allison & Keegan’s Spring Photoshoot in DC

Although we’re not new to photography, we are new to the wedding photography industry, so when we had the opportunity to capture Allison and Keegan’s Engagement photoshoot, we were thrilled.

Allison and Keegan met in Washington, DC, so naturally there are many places with sentimental value. And with Keegan being a professional photographer himself for organizations like the White House and NASA- we knew we had to pull out all the stops to make these shots memorable and special.

Setting the Scene

It was important to the couple that the photos clearly captured the essence of DC so that when their friends and loved ones admired the photos later, they could immediately tell where Allison and Keegan were. They also wanted some more intimate scenes that might not be as clear as to others, but held significance in their relationship.

We worked with the couple to find spots and backup locations that were special to them and iconic of DC. One of our favorite spots is Constitution Gardens- here you get some iconic DC sites, like the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial in the background, while also grabbing those lush Spring vibes this time of year. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic and cozy feel. I think one of my favorite images here is the couple under the willow tree- I feel like this should be on the cover of some romantic getaway magazine for DC.

Special Touches

While it’s not the wedding, engagement shoots are a fun and special day for the couple. It’s not often that we get to dress up and be the center of attention. It’s exciting, but can also feel a little daunting- there’s all these questions around what to wear, how to pose, and for those of who hate getting our picture taken, it can feel a little awkward.

We wanted to find special touches that could help the couple feel comfortable and show their true selves during the shoot. Our second stop was the Kennedy Center, where we brought out the champagne toast and celebrated with some rooftop dancing. Eric really got into it here and was totally unafraid to get down and dirty for the right angle, which I think helped to ramp up the energy.

Next, Allison and Keegan’s first date was at Sakuramen DC, so we knew we had to stop there for lunch. But this also gave us a chance to take some photos for a full circle story from “first date to forever.” The chef even greeted them personally to congratulate them- our cheeks were sore from smiling so much, and our stomachs were full of delicious food to keep us going.

Our last stop was Meridian Hill Park- a frequent walking spot for Allison and Keegan. Eric brought out the big one for this- a large format camera. Here, Eric shows Keegan and Allison what the shot could look like, as Tom stands in as the model.  That film is still being processed, but we’re excited to see how it turns out.

Getting the Shot

Each couple is different, and therefore each shoot is different. For Keegan and Allison, that meant nature, ramen, and sophistication. Our aim with engagement and wedding photography is to make the images unique to the couple with formats that bring out their relationship dynamic- to tell a story. Sometimes it’s about posing, but it often goes beyond that. We aim to bring the couple into the experience and give them a chance to be a part of the process. Allison and Keegan were knowledgeable of what they wanted, but we hope the little things we added helped bring more of the emotions to life and a memorable day for them too.
